What makes art, art?
Process. Context. Concept. Emotion.
The nature of art lies in the process it took to create. We don’t simply acknowledge art because it is but rather the capacity it carries through its conception. Like all other content areas, art’s essence lies in both its presence and its past. A Picasso isn't a Picasso solely because he painted it but the history it took from the past and through the present. He defied tradition and that meant something in his lifetime as it still does in our own—circumstantial context. Just as a child’s artwork is no lesser in value to a Picasso if it is as rich in concept. True, possibly anything can be art. It has the potential to be everywhere and yes, perhaps, we can look at anything and find beauty. However, it is in the emotion of that beauty that resides art’s true power. Artists live in this civilization of individuals and cultures struggling to exist with each other. But through shared emotion we connect to each other. We find commonalities and grow, together. That’s what makes art.
